A full-service removal company provides its own crew and a vehicle dedicated to your move on a date agreed in advance. Full house removals generally cover loading, transport and unloading, while packing, dismantling, reassembly and storage can often be added if needed.

You have an agreed moving date, professional help with the heavy lifting and one company responsible for transporting your belongings from your old home to your new one. This can be particularly valuable when your moving date depends on a property completion or when you have a larger household to move.
With a part-load service, your belongings share vehicle space with other customers’ loads travelling in the same direction. Part load removals can therefore be more affordable than booking a dedicated vehicle, but collection and delivery dates may be less flexible.
A man-and-van service works slightly differently. You normally hire a smaller vehicle with one or two movers, often at an hourly rate. This can work well for one or two-bedroom properties, smaller local moves or households with relatively few belongings.
With self-drive van hire, you are responsible for loading, driving and unloading the vehicle yourself. It can be one of the cheapest options for a small move, but the headline rental price is not the only cost to consider. Fuel, mileage charges, insurance excess and the possibility of needing a second journey can all add to the final bill.
Self-drive is best suited to smaller, lighter moves where you have enough time and help available. For larger properties, bulky furniture or difficult access, professional assistance can quickly become worth the extra cost.

Before booking, ask how your belongings will be stored, whether they need to be unloaded and reloaded between locations, how access to the storage unit works and whether storage insurance is included in the price.
Most professional moving companies include some form of goods-in-transit cover, but the exact level of protection varies. Before booking, check what the company’s removals insurance covers, whether there is a maximum value per item and whether certain belongings need to be declared separately.
This is especially important for valuable, fragile or specialist items. Some policies may also apply different conditions depending on whether the removal company packed the items or you packed them yourself.
Do not assume that every quote offers the same level of protection. Ask for the insurance terms before moving day and check whether additional cover is available if the standard limit is lower than the value of your belongings.

Accreditation is also worth checking. Membership of a body such as the British Association of Removers means a company has met independently audited standards for service, vehicles and staff training, which is a reasonable proxy for reliability before you’ve dealt with a company yourself.
For a very small move over a short distance, hiring a full removal company may not always be necessary. As the size, distance and complexity of the move increase, however, professional home removals can offer considerably more convenience and peace of mind.
