Wondering how much your move will cost? Our removal costs calculator gives you a realistic price range in seconds, based on real prices UK removal companies have quoted for similar moves. Once you’ve got your estimate, you can request up to five free quotes to see what you’d actually pay.
Our calculator asks for two things: where you’re moving from and to, and your property size, from a studio up to a 5+ bedroom house. Fill those in and it works out a realistic price range in a few seconds, from an economy, part-load estimate at one end to a full-service, premium one at the other, based on real prices UK removal companies have quoted for similar moves.
Your estimate gives you a budget to work from. The next step is finding out what movers would actually charge for your specific move, and that takes about two minutes with no obligation to book anything.
Take a 3-bed house as an example. Moving it locally costs somewhere between £705 and £1,380, depending on whether you go economy or full service. Moving that same house 125 miles or more typically costs £1,225 to £2,395 instead, roughly 70-75% more at either end. Distance clearly matters, and it’s not something to wave away.
But size still moves the price further. That same local move costs as little as £430 to £725 for a studio or 1-bed flat, and £1,060 to £2,110 for a 5-bed house, close to a 3x jump at the same distance and service level. So if you’re trying to work out where your money is actually going, or where you might be able to save some, how much you’re taking is usually the bigger lever, even though distance is worth planning around too. The full breakdown by size and distance is below.
| Distance | 1-bed | 3-bed | 5-bed |
| Local, under 50 miles | £430 – £725 | £705 – £1,380 | £1,060 – £2,110 |
| Regional, 50-125 miles | £560 – £940 | £910 – £1,785 | £1,370 – £2,725 |
| Long distance, 125+ miles | £755 – £1,275 | £1,225 – £2,395 | £1,835 – £3,655 |

Beyond size and distance, two other things move the price within the ranges above.
Which service level you choose is what actually decides where you land in each range: it’s the gap between the economy and full-service figures in the table. Going for a part-load or man-and-van option instead of a full-service move can save anywhere from under 10% on a small flat to over a third on a larger house, while having the crew pack everything for you typically adds £250 for a small flat to £480 or more for a larger one. Our removal costs guide compares the mover types side by side if you want to weigh that trade-off in more depth. It also comes down to cubic metres: a one-bedroom flat is usually around 10-15 cubic metres of belongings, while a five-bedroom house can be five times that. For a precise figure based on exactly what you own, room by room, try our removal volume calculator before you request quotes.
Access and timing move the price too, sometimes by more than people expect. Stairs, a long carry from the van to your door, or no parking right outside all add labour time. Moving in peak season (the end of the month, school holidays, or June to August) can add around 17% to the transport cost, so if your dates are flexible, it’s worth asking removal companies what a quieter date would save you.
Once quotes start coming in, they won’t all be structured the same way, so it’s worth checking a few things before picking one. Ask whether the price is fixed or just an estimate, whether packing materials and labour are already included, and whether VAT is added on top or already in the figure you’re looking at. It’s also worth a quick look at reviews and how long the company has been trading, since a slightly higher quote from an established mover is often better value than the cheapest one on the list.

Once you’ve got a rough budget from the calculator above and a sense of real prices from your quotes, the last piece is making sure the move itself goes smoothly. Our moving house checklist covers what to sort out in the weeks before moving day. If you’re leaving the UK altogether, our guide to moving abroad is a better starting point than this page. And if you’d rather read a full breakdown of average UK removal costs by property size, distance and region before requesting quotes, our removal costs guide covers that in more depth.
