Removal and packing service excellent
Storage service poor

I used Keans Removals for its removal and packing services, and to rent a storage unit for the storage of my former house contents. The removal and packing service was excellent; however, the storage service (which was non accessible), for which I paid around £20,000 for a period of around 20 years, was handled very poorly.

l cannot recommend Keans Removals for its storage service for the reasons given below.

The storage service was unprofessional, and there was a lack of transparency with regard to the written contract terms between the parties, which a court subsequently ruled, although alleged by Mr Kean did not exist.
My storage arrangement with Keans Removals ended in court proceedings brought by [Name removed by Sirelo], for an alleged sum of around £700 owing in storage fees, plus disposal and court fees. I had suffered a collective redundancy (workplace closure) and a heart attack, but Mr [Name removed by Sirelo] proceeded to act ruthless impunity and evasively in connection with an alleged outstanding sum which I did not owe. He levied interest charges which he removed after amending and re-dating invoices before the court hearing, and he increased the monthly storage fee without having the authority to do so.
Further, I tried to bring the storage arrangement to an end to stop ongoing fees and charges mounting, and I wanted to gain access to my items, so that I could mitigate my losses. I was unable to access the facility and Mr [Name removed by Sirelo] refused to release the contents of the unit (which included both valuable and sentimental items), which would have allowed me to sell some of the more valuable items on ebay and set the cost against the sum that I owed, even though there was no contract which entitled him to hold on to them.
When I requested that he permit me to arrange for release of my belongings, he messaged “delivery is not my concern at the moment”. He then messaged that he had not got the time to go through the goods himself. When I asked him to take photos of the goods in storage, he replied “I haven’t got the time, its just going to the tip”, he texted “You have left me with all your shit to get rid of”. He then sent me a string of abusive personal messages on my mobile, which appeared to be an attempt to bully me into paying what he believed I owed.
The court ordered me to pay some of the storage fees which I did. however, the court ruled that the Company had not been entitled to increase its storage fees, as there was no provision or agreement that entitled it to do so. It also ruled that there was no written contract between the parties, as alleged and provided by Mr [Name removed by Sirelo] at the court hearing. Further I noticed that the specimen written contract on the Company's website did not relate to the written contract that he provided to the court.
Although I admit that I owed the Company around £700, which was a negligible amount, given my history of 20 years payments to the Company, amounting to around £20,000, I believe Mr [Name removed by Sirelo] acted ruthlessly and abusively at times, and with a lack of transparency regard to the terms of an alleged written contract between the parties; he could have allowed me to mitigate my losses to bring the arrangement to an amicable end. Instead he advised that there was no option but to agree to disposal of the entire contents of the unit at a fee of around £456. Also, there was no evidence of how and when my goods were disposed of by the Company.
For the above reasons, although I can recommend the removal and packing service, I cannot recommend Keans Removals for its storage service.
