If you’re lucky to be a holder of a European Union or EEA passport, you’ll have free movement through European members countries, Austria being one, and don’t need a visa. As an EU citizen, you can move to Austria for up to 90 days without legal permission. You’ll just need to apply for a residency permit if you want to stay long term and work, which we will explain in a bit. 😊
However, if you do not hold an EU or EEA passport, you’ll need to apply for a visa if you intend to stay for a longer period of time or you would like to work in Austria. A consequence of Brexit is that holders of a UK passport are no longer EU citizens and are not able to move freely in Europe. Please keep this in mind when moving to Austria.

As we mentioned, you must apply for permanent residency if you want to live in Austria as an EU or EEA national. In order to get a residency permit, you must prove that you have enough money to finance your stay, as you are not yet applicable to benefit from the Austrian social security system. If you have permanent employment in Austria, you automatically get a residence permit valid for five years.
Non-EU citizens will need to have a visa when they arrive in Austria. The application must be complete in Austrian embassy of your home country or the country you’re legally residing in. There are different types of visas that allow entry for work and long term:
In the case of a D visa, you can apply for a residency permit once you’ve arrived. The D visa is not extendable and does not allow you to work, but merely acts as a bridge for getting you to Austria. For further information, visit the Austrian Embassy.
Here are some of the documents that will prove vital when you are applying for a visa. Be sure to have them ready since you must pay to be processed, and we can imagine you want the process to be as efficient as possible.
The visa application process can take up to 4 weeks, so you should start the process early in case of delay. In case of a longer stay, a residence permit must be requested.
The process shouldn’t be hard, you just need to be prepared. Of course, if you have any further questions about Austrian visas, contact the Austrian Embassy.
