From Oxford to Florence with Our Family

Finding Home Faster Than Expected

From Oxford to Florence: view of Florence from above
Moving from Oxford to Florence was a big step for our family. We relocated because of my husband’s career, but we also wanted a better lifestyle for ourselves and our children. It was exciting, but like any international move, there were plenty of things to think about before we left.

A Better Lifestyle for Our Family

The main reason we decided to move was my husband’s career opportunity and the chance to give our family a better lifestyle. We were also excited by the idea of our children growing up with the opportunity to learn another language. It felt like a big change, but one that we were all looking forward to.

A Recommendation That Made the Difference

We found Eurogroup International Movers through friends who had moved earlier in the year. They told us to contact Jordan directly because they had such a good experience.

From our first conversation, he was very helpful, quick to respond, and answered every question we had. The quote arrived almost immediately after the survey, and the price fit well within our budget, which made a huge difference for us. More importantly, I felt comfortable from the beginning.

“Perfect from beginning to end and all I can say is, if we move again, we will go straight to Jordan and Eurogroup again.”

Planning Around Packing and Customs

Before the move, my biggest concern was what would happen once our belongings left the UK. We had heard horror stories about large moving companies handing deliveries over to different companies abroad, and that worried me.

One of the reasons we chose Eurogroup was that they handled the entire move from beginning to end. Jordan reassured me about everything, from packing and customs clearance to what life in Italy would be like because he had lived there himself. Having one person looking after us throughout the process gave me confidence.

Watching Everything Arrive in Florence

When moving day finally came, everything happened just as we had been told it would.

Our belongings arrived within the expected timeframe. There was no damage, and there were no issues with customs thanks to Jordan’s guidance. The team also unpacked everything and removed all of the boxes, which meant we could immediately start putting our belongings into cupboards and wardrobes instead of dealing with piles of packing materials.

By the next day, we were already fully set up.

Discovering Life in Florence

Florence immediately felt very different from Oxford. It is much busier, with bustling streets everywhere, but we’ve really enjoyed discovering it.

Finding our local shop, our local bar, and learning how to use public transport has all been part of settling into daily life. Everyone has been very friendly and has made us feel welcome. It is a big change, but we are excited about it and hope our children pick up Italian quickly.

Turning an Apartment into Home

We moved from a house with a garden to a large apartment, so we are still getting used to apartment living and learning the layout of our new home.

Thankfully, because everything had already been unpacked, it felt like home almost immediately. Having the children’s rooms and toys ready straight away helped them settle in, and my husband was able to start work without worrying about the move. We have plenty of space and a balcony, so we are all very happy.

What Went Well

  • Our friends’ recommendation led us to a mover we felt comfortable with.
  • Communication was quick and reassuring throughout the process
  • The quoted cost matched the final cost.
  • Everything arrived on time with no damage.
  • Customs clearance went exactly as planned.
  • The unpacking service helped us feel at home by the following day.

What Didn’t Go as Expected

  • We underestimated how early we should have contacted a moving company.
  • We forgot to buy everyday essentials like shampoo, shower gel, milk, and coffee before moving in.
  • Adjusting from a house with a garden to apartment living is still something we are learning.

Budget

The final cost was exactly what we expected based on the quotation and the comparisons we had made with other moving companies before choosing Eurogroup International Movers.

Preparing for Your Own Move

If you’re planning a similar move, these are the things I would recommend:

  • Contact your moving company earlier than you think you need to.
  • Ask friends for recommendations if they’ve recently completed an international move.
  • Make sure you buy basic essentials like milk, coffee, shampoo, and shower gel before moving day.
  • Choose a mover that manages the whole process if that gives you greater peace of mind.
  • Be ready for your new surroundings to feel different, but give yourself time to settle in.

Finding Home One Day at a Time

Looking back, our move gave us exactly what we hoped for. We arrived with everything we needed, settled in almost immediately, and could focus on starting our new lives in Florence instead of worrying about the move itself. For us, feeling confident in the people handling our belongings made all the difference, and being able to wake up the next morning already feeling at home was the best possible start to this new chapter.
