I was changing jobs so I had to move from the UK to Switzerland. I wasn’t aware how much stuff we would end up moving, so there were a lot of unknowns and having all of these things hanging over our head for over a month wasn’t too great. Luckily, the moving company was really good and kept us informed along the way and gave us ample time to measure and weigh our stuff. The stressful part was only the border check in Switzerland as the border would be closed in the weekend/holidays so there was only one day to cross it, otherwise our things would have been delayed further.
We got a variety of quotes from about 20 moving companies all in all (from sirelo and two other websites). Most companies were quoting us about 10-20% more and almost all would have packed our things in larger moving vans, meaning that our things could have taken a few weeks to arrive in Switzerland. There were only 2 companies that would offer a dedicated Luton van to transport our belongings and JCL Removlas was about 15% cheaper, so that was a big reason. Seeing a lot of positive reviews helped reassure us in entrusting them with our things.
A day before having our things picked up, the representative from JCL Removals gave us the time slot at which the driver would be arriving. He arrived right on time and helped up load up things giving us advice on the order in which we should bring down boxes in to make sure the packages will be safe. He gave us a hand with everything, tied everything down and locked it neatly in place. Everything really went well and there were no hiccups, the only issue was that it started raining, which made us hurry up quite a bit!
The top tips would be to buy proper packing boxes. As things get moved around during shipping, boxes that aren’t sturdy enough will get crumpled or crushed, so spending a bit extra money is going to help keeping your things secure. Bubble wrap – lots of it or paper packing! Weigh each box and write a list of things you have in it – this will make it easy to figure out how much your stuff will weigh and where to find things. Also make sure to get an idea of volume – how much these will take up and these two things in tandem will allow you to get the best value quote.
